ISMLA MEMBERSHIP
Founded over thirty years ago, ISMLA remains committed to the principles on which it was established: advocacy, professional community and partnership.
Over the past year, ISMLA has continued to represent the interests of independent schools in discussions surrounding curriculum reform, assessment, severe grading and teacher recruitment. Through ongoing dialogue with organisations such as ALL, the British Council, universities, DfE, Ofqual and the awarding bodies, we have helped secure positive developments in the grading of several lesser-taught languages and continue to monitor the new GCSE closely.
At the same time, ISMLA has strengthened its professional community through conferences, Teach Meets and subject forums, while supporting a range of projects and partnerships including the Queen’s Translation Exchange, the UK Linguistics Olympiad, theatre festivals, debating competitions and the forthcoming National Festival of Languages in 2027. A current list of members can be found here.

Members are warmly invited to contact the relevant ISMLA committee member to voice any views they may have about key issues concerning modern language teaching in this country. The Examinations Liaison Officer is particularly interested in issues regarding the setting and marking of public examinations (with accompanying evidence!). Contributions to ISMLA’s termly bulletin are also gratefully received.
Your membership helps make all of this possible.
