ISMLA exists to provide a forum
for Modern Languages teachers in Independent Secondary schools to meet,
share ideas and inform themselves about and contribute to developments
in Modern Languages Teaching.
ISMLA’s activities can be summarised as follows:
- Representation of the views of members with QCA, awarding bodies and
other organisations.
This is achieved through close working relationships with ALL (The
Association for Language Learning and CILT (The Centre for Information
on Language Teaching).
- ISMLA is a member of the Languages Alliance, which discusses issues of
concerns with Dr Lid King, the National Director for Languages.
A committee member, Dr Geoffrey Plow, is responsible for liaising with
awarding bodies over members’ examinations concerns.
- Publication of a termly newsletter (past editions of which can be
downloaded from this website)
- An Annual Conference is held in the Spring Term
- Financial support for other events, such as regional conferences.
Members are warmly invited to contact the relevant ISMLA committee
member to voice any views they may have about the key issues concerning
languages teaching in this country. Dr Geoffrey Plow is particularly interested in complaints about the setting
and marking of public examinations (with accompanying evidence!)
Contributions to ISMLA’s termly newsletter are also gratefully received.
It is ISMLA’s goal to ensure that all types of independent school and
all regions of Great Britain are represented and the Chairman, Mr Nick
Mair, would be pleased to hear from any teacher who would be interested
in joining the committee.
